Athens in a day

Wednesday 15th May 2024

6.19 am and I haven’t slept a moment since I arrived in Athens. I’d been through so many obstacles to get here that the adrenaline still courses through me, awake because of the buzzing excitement within me rather than the gentle hum of morning outside. Because of this I am able to watch the gradients of dawn wash over our room, that soft blue shade as light as a whisper transforming shadows into silhouettes and then silhouettes into trees basked in sunrise.

I go out on to our balcony and breathe in the fresh air. A rustle on a wall opposite me reveals a white cat, staring at me quizzically, wondering what business I had being up so early.

“I’m on holiday ok, cat? I’ve dreamt of this moment and now I’m awake in it!” I say with my eyes.

The cat seems unfazed and cooly slips into the next garden.

The flat we are staying in has a few orange trees in front of it, I’ve never seen orange trees before.
